The trick - and I haven't proved it wholly works yet - is to take to the streets, or rather local industrial estates, and ideally armed with an ex-newspaper ad salesperson go and drag all the little local firms online via banner advertising; it's a hard sell and a slog. But every plumber, skip hire business and small town solicitor will have built their own website of late - they just don't know what to do with it next. Persuade them that the best place to market it is on a busy local news/sports site and not by throwing more and more money someone else's way simply to keep their ranking intact... long way to go, but me and my ad pal did £40,000 in Year One to be split between the two of us...
