A local site I'm hoping will succeed is Oakland's NovoMetro.
http://novometro.com/index.php

But this morning, in what seems to be the very antithesis of its avowed aims to report the positive stories about Oakland that never see the light of day, someone posted something called "Saturday Morning NewsReel" a roundup of all the bad news stories of the past week that were in the big media. Sigh!

NovoMetro pays $50 for 500-word stories, so maybe this is some lazy person's way of earning some pocket change.
