studying the media ecosystem
Here is an excerpt from a proprietary research report from eMarketer that estimates “US user-generated content sites will earn $4.3 billion in ad revenues in 2011, up from $1 billion in 2007. ” The participation numbers strike me as high but there you have it.

My recent blog entry about the new suburban web site launched by the Washington Post in Loundoun County, Virginia, put the hyperlocal category on my radar. Last week 19-station chain Fisher Communications purchased Pegasus News, a hyperlocal web site in Dallas. An article in the (Charlotte, North Carolina!) Business Journal said financial terms were not disclosed. It adds that:

In looking over a recent speech from Dan Gillmor, summing up the state of citizen journalism, he made reference to a project called News Trust that is:
“developing an online news rating service to help people identify quality journalism - or ‘news you can trust.’ Our members rate the news online, based on journalistic quality, not just popularity. [...]
A posting that referenced the Washington Post’s new web site focused on suburban Loudoun County, Virginia, drew a thoughtful comment from Roselea Barker that I would like to amplify and discuss here. She said:
“In order to describe what’s happening with the way people interact with media, we need a new word that’s somewhere between ‘internet’ and ‘intranet”. [...]
The Fresno Bee said Tuesday that it was outsourcing some advertising production work to India, and that seven of 31 Americans working in that department would be laid off.
