I think it's a little scary that he used the Huffington Post as the example of the newspaper of the future. Why? Because the Huffington Post doesn't even pay several of its star writers. Hopefully the industry isn't going in that direction.

Mike, I wrote a post about online job hunts.
http://minimediaguy.org/2007/02/12/how-to-hire-an-online-journalist-or-get-a-job-as-one/

You can try you luck at older media but they are contacting and the inexperienced are at the greatest disadvantage.

Good luck. Tom

Tom,
This is a great and very interesting post. I turned 30 last fall and have been seriously considering a switch to a career in journalism...so much so that I actually applied to MA programs this year. I've actually been rejected at most of the schools (including your alma mater) but one piece of feedback from a respected local program that I got was that I had skill and merit as a writer, but little real experience in the field. I don't have any clips under my belt, in other words. What kinds of things would you suggest to a person trying to make a career change in terms of making some contacts and finding outlets for their writing? Thanks!
